California Dreamin'

Organized by the Boston University Art Gallery, this exhibition examines camera clubs and the pictorial photography tradition in California. Included are early pictorialist works by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston as well as work by a range of lesser-known photographers who where active in California during the first decades of the twentieth century. There are clear links between the pictorialist movement on the West Coast and that in the East, particularly New York, and the international European movement, as well as close contacts with Japan. The California pictorialist group relied heavily on the club and salon systems, and their rich imagery and creative printing processes positioned these artists firming in the international exchange of ideas prior to World War II.
