The Tai Daeng (Red Tai), who live along the Lao-Vietnamese border, represent just one of many groups of peoples who speak Tai-Kadai languages, and whose cultures are spread throughout Southeast Asia. Textiles represent the major art form for all these groups, serving a variety of societal functions. Traditionally, a woman began at an early age to learn to process cotton and silk; in preparation for marriage she was expected to develop sophisticated skills in weaving, and her acumen in these endeavors believed to determine the success of her household.

Diamond or lozenge designs accented with short scrolls feature prominently in this blanket, and probably serve a talismanic, protective function, appropriate for someone while traveling, or as a baby’s covering.
