In the 1990s Charles Long became known for his collaboration on a series of sculptures with the British pop band Stereolab. Viewers were physically connected to the work by putting on headphones plugged into the sculptures. While still making abstract references to the body, Long’s newer work has become intensely personal, incorporating his young son’s drawings and evoking the spiritual power of talismans and totem poles. The Scattered Tamarack not only continues Long’s interest in the history of sculpture, particularly modernist sculpture, but also his investigation of sculptural materials. Long has said that “the sculpture is inspiration itself,” that is, the viewer gets a glimpse into the creative process as images from various sources are brought together to reveal a sense of healing energy and wholeness. The Scattered Tamarack is a good example of how contemporary artists continue to broaden the definition of sculpture in both material and concept.
