The predominant ceramic ware of the early Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), buncheong literally means “powder green” and its early examples share stylistic features with late Goryeo celadons, such as a coarser clay body and tendency to gray color. Other decorative techniques were also employed for this ware, which was made by numerous kilns. For example, the kilns near Mount Gyeryong are distinguished for their freely painted designs in iron-brown over a white slip. Many buncheong wares were exported to Japan, where they were revered for their unpretentiousness.
