Jane Hammond is well-known for paintings and drawings filled with signs and images collected from a variety of sources—biology, mathematics, popular culture, and children’s stories, to name only a few. Resembling an opened, three-ring binder, Hammond’s rebus painting reads like a book, left page separate from right page, from left to right and top to bottom. Linking various images from her system of 276 symbols with phonetic instructions, Hammond spells puzzle answers in these paintings that “create braids of associations with the painting’s title,” according to the artist.
