An early nomadic culture flourished in the mountainous area of northwestern Iran known as Luristan in the early first millennium BC. Items found in tombs from this culture include a variety of bronze ornaments, weapons, and jewelry with designs predominated by animals, both real and mythical. On this cheekpiece, which was originally one of a pair held together by a bronze rod to form the bit for a horse, two winged griffins combat ibex.
