The art of South Asia is closely tied to Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, three of the world’s major religions founded in the Indian subcontinent. The Johnson’s collection includes early Buddhist sculpture and architectural fragments from the Gandharan region (modern Pakistan) and Kashan kingdom, as well as later Hindu and Jain sculpture related to temple worship. Miniature paintings include illustrations of important religious texts such as the Jain Kalpasutra, Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and stories of Radha and Krishna. Mughal patronage of the arts, which introduced Islam and Persian language and painting styles to India, is represented in the art of the book and decorative arts. The paintings collection includes works by most of the major Rajput schools of northern India, paintings made for British patrons in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and twentieth-century modernist works.
