Artists Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler shared a history that makes a fascinating tale of determination, drive, talent, and guts. Each woman was key to the evolution of abstract art in America, but they have often been overshadowed by their male counterparts—some of whom were their partners.

This fall, as we explore the artistic lives of women in the exhibition Women Making Their Mark, Ninth Street Women: Five Painters and the Movement by Mary Gabriel strongly resonates with its theme: how women were able to express themselves in a male-dominated field.

The Johnson Museum organized a major retrospective of Joan Mitchell (1925–1992), guest curated by Cornell’s Judith E. Bernstock, which toured in the late 1980s to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art in addition to being on view at the Johnson.
